Off Season

I spotted this colorful kite swimming amid the branches of a tree.  It was late January, on one of those rare spring-like days that teases us long before the last frost.  I admired whatever family had tried winter kite flying; although their efforts ended with this, in a public park near the lake.  I was there because my family was also spending that unusually warm morning outdoors under the sparkling clear, cobalt-blue sky.
We're approaching the official start of spring on the 20th of this month, with the usual expectations of no more snow and the all-clear to plant our gardens and perfect kite-flying weather.  As the family organizer, like most moms are, I have certain things sensibly planned for each season.  I hope I'll always be attentive enough to fly a kite in winter, if that's what the day calls for.
