The folks who operate the unique Mobile Farmers' Market in Northeast Tennessee are hosting an educational webinar next week. It's an opportunity for people in other communities to learn what it takes to connect farm-fresh foods with nearby residents.
Rhonda Hensley with Rural Resources, May 2011 |
Flour Sack Mama followed along with the Rural Resources mobile project on a delivery route last spring, where we met Market Manager Rhonda Hensley and some of her customers. Through a combination of public and private funding, the market has been providing the mobile service since 2005 and serves as a model for other communities. SNAP customers on public assistance are able to purchase nutritious food through the program, and residents without transportation are able to have their fresh produce and eggs delivered.
Rural Resources states, "Our mission is to connect farms, food, and families by facilitating learning experiences to preserve farmland, natural resources, and sustainable agriculture practices to build a vibrant local food economy."
You can see a video about the market here: http://vimeo.com/31434582.
Here's the link to connect to the webinar coming up March 5th.
